US Forces Targeted a 'Major Complex' in Venezuela, President Trump Claimed Without Providing Details.

Ex-President Donald Trump has claimed that American military assets hit a "significant facility" in the South American country in recent days. But, the former president offered no details on the precise purpose or location of the target, and there has been no additional clarification from his team.

Unspecific Comments Offered In a Radio Show

"US forces just knocked out – I'm not sure if you heard – they have a large facility, where the vessels originate. The other night, we took it out. So we struck them decisively," Trump allegedly informed GOP supporter and businessman John Catsimatidis on Friday.

Possible Implications of a Confirmed Strike

Should a American strike were to be verified, it would represent the initial land strike since the US Department of Defense began a buildup of US military presence in the region to interdict narco-trafficking operations that the former administration asserts operate under the orders of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro.

This stated mission of the force deployment has since morphed into a quarantine aimed at disrupting the country's oil exports.

Online Footage and Administration Statements

Trump has for some time warned that US forces are prepared to expand the operations by hitting objectives inside Venezuela, a strategy that would in theory require legislative approval.

Online video posted online on 24 December seemed to depict an explosion said to be from an industrial area in a Venezuelan state. But, the video or the facility has not been independently verified.

An official from Trump's team reportedly informed a news network that the former president was describing a drug facility in his comments.

Reaction and Ongoing Military Posture

The Maduro government has issued no statement on the incident Trump referenced. Additionally, there have been no independent reports from Venezuela about it.

The buildup of US military in the region – a posture some have referred to as a naval quarantine – represents the most expansive naval operation of the Trump era.

Administration officials have stopped short from labeling the operation as a blockade, but have acknowledged that about 15,000 personnel are deployed across the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico, including a aircraft carrier group, advanced fighter jets, and law enforcement vessels to uphold current sanctions.
